Derek Carawan was brought up in an Air Force family and has lived around the country. Upon his dad’s retirement, they moved back “home” to the North Carolina coast in the mid 70’s. Derek moved to Raleigh in 1980, completed an engineering degree at North Carolina State University and has lived in Raleigh since then.  He and Helen met in 1989 and were married in 1992.

Camping, kayaking, cycling and watching their children compete in sports are some of their favorite activities. He and his family built a wooden kayak in 2004 and frequently paddle their kayaks in local lakes and at the coast.
